Empowered by their shared vision, women co-founders, Dr. Anitha Rao and Marguerite Manteau-Rao started Neurocern in 2014. The company has become a leading force in the field of aging, neurology, and digital health. After meeting through a mutual colleague and realizing they share interests that go beyond just their shared last name, both women embarked on a journey to start Neurocern. Their mission is to support the families who need expert information in caring for an aging adult.
During her years caring for her mom with Alzheimer’s, Marguerite became aware of the many challenges with being a family caregiver. As a working mother herself and a caregiver to her mother, Marguerite found herself to be part of the ‘sandwich generation’. Searching for answers on how to help her mother with behaviors left Marguerite frustrated and overwhelmed with no help. She told herself there had to be a better way. Marguerite decided to do a deep dive into the field and applied her clinical social work training to work with families and patients in memory care communities and adult day programs. There, she met countless families like her who were all looking for answers on how to help their loved one.
As a board-certified geriatric neurologist, Dr. Anitha Rao represents one in 600 neurologists trained in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry. During her fellowship training at the internationally recognized neuroscience center at the University of California San Francisco, she was approached by families who asked her, “what I do now after the diagnosis”? She realized the real need was not just an expert diagnosis, but also a personalized roadmap on how to manage complex neurological and behavioral symptoms at home. After completing her training, she began a career in entrepreneurship and digital health to provide families access to expert tools to improve outcomes for the aging population.
